Lucy Brewer is a professional writer, cook, and travel afficionado living near Atlanta, Georgia.
With a Master of Arts in Professional Writing and more than twenty years experience writing and editing professionally, she’s blending a love of writing with a passion for cooking, entertaining, and traveling into a breathing representation of all—In a Southern Kitchen.
I learned to cook standing in a chair at my grandmother’s and mother’s kitchen counter, and over the last twenty-five years have studied the art and practiced on my family and friends. I still call Granny and Mama to ask for directions and there are many things that I’ll probably never get exactly right.
Many of the foods they cooked, and consequently many of the foods I cook, don’t have written instructions.
They live in our heads and we simply know what to add by sight, touch, or taste. A lifelong Georgia girl, I grew up on a farm just outside the small town of Oglethorpe, right in the heart of pine country.
We had cows, pigs, chickens, goats, sometimes horses, lots of hound dogs, and barn cats.
My grandmother and my mother canned and froze everything they possibly could so we could eat on it all year, and we raised and ate our own cows, pigs and chickens—all of which lived outside.
We ate local and sustainable free-range food without realizing it would someday be trendy.
It was just how we lived.
Lucy lives in a suburb of Atlanta with her husband, David. Their three adult children all live in Georgia:
** Daughter Malorie—married to Gavin. They live in a zoo in Augusta with our two grandchildren, Luke (2) and Brooklyn (baby). Then there’s Dallas the Crazy German Shepherd, Duke the Labrador Retriever, and Kobe the poor, beleaguered house cat.
** Son Brian—married to Caroline. They live in Atlanta with Catfish the Lab and their sweet kitty cat, Furgie.
** Son Casey—lives in Atlanta and works in the family business.
